The current year 2025 may be among the three warmest years in the entire history of observations; most likely, it will take 3rd place, Interfax reports, citing Roman Vilfand, scientific director of the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia.
“This is a trend of increasing temperatures, it is obvious. The last 10 years, from 2015 to 2024, are among the ten warmest years. The first and second places are shared by 2023 and 2024. And 2025, most likely, will be in third place,” Vilfand said.
Earlier, the European climate service Copernicus expressed the opinion that 2025 will be the second or third hottest year on record.
Vilfand explained that warming is associated with an increase in the concentration of greenhouse gases. “But still, in 2025, the El Niño phenomenon prevailed in the Pacific Ocean. In the equatorial waters of the Pacific Ocean, the temperature was below normal. Even 40 years ago, this would have led to this year being one of the coldest,” the forecaster said.
“Now, regardless of whether it is El Niño or La Niña, the temperature is the same. And the conclusion from here is that the anthropogenic factor, which leads to an increase in the concentration of greenhouse gases, significantly prevails over natural factors for the formation of macro-scale temperature, and global temperature. This is very important, and this is sad,” he added.
