Farms in the Chelyabinsk region sowed winter crops on an area of 31.8 thousand hectares for the 2026 harvest, which is 1.7 times more than was occupied by winter crops last year for the current year's harvest, Interfax reports with reference to the regional Ministry of Agriculture.
“Agricultural producers are increasing the sowing of winter crops, since they ultimately provide a good increase in yield, although they occupy a very small share of the crops. In addition, in the event of, for example, drought, winter crops are used in the spring as an insurance stock of feed,” the press service explained.
According to the press service, this year farmers traditionally sowed winter rye, wheat, and triticale.
In addition, this year in the Uvelsky municipal district, winter rapeseed was sown for the first time in the region after a 15-year break.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture of the region, in 2025, 48.7 thousand tons of winter crops were harvested, the sowing of which was carried out in 2024. This is 1.7 times more than a year earlier. The yield of winter rye in bunker weight was 29.7 centners per hectare (an increase of 1.7 times compared to the 2024 harvest); winter wheat - 29.6 c/ha (at the 2024 level); winter triticale - 41.8 c/ha (increase 1.8 times).
