GRAIN MARKET NEWS
• In Russia, as of December 2, the volume of collected grain in bunker weight exceeds 145 million tons. The yield of main crops exceeds last year's. 97% of the area of grain and leguminous crops has been harvested. The sowing of winter grains has been completed and is almost fully in line with forecasts - about 20 million hectares have been sown.
• Warm weather in the south of the Russian Federation, where large areas of winter crops are located, creates risks for crops, reports ICAR. The likelihood of crop death and damage in the future is increasing, but the situation this year is better than it was last fall.
• Major rice harvesting work has been completed in Russia. In total, 185.6 thousand hectares were threshed, with an average yield of 63.9 c/ha, 1.185 million tons were collected. The main contribution was traditionally provided by the Southern Federal District - more than 999 thousand tons of rice were harvested here. Earlier, the National Rice Union called for the complete lifting of restrictions on the export of paddy rice and rice cereals. The organization emphasizes that the production volume is sufficient to fully meet domestic consumption.
• VTB plans to create a large agricultural holding based on assets nationalized in the southern regions of the Russian Federation in December 2024. This was stated by the head of the bank Andrey Kostin. 3-5 years are allotted for implementation. The new holding will focus on domestic processing of grain and other agricultural products.
• This year in the Russian Federation, the actual capacity of the combine harvester market is forecast to be 2.72 thousand machines, Rostselmash reports. Starting from 2021, the market capacity of combine harvesters is decreasing (8.54 thousand versus 4.9 thousand units in 2024). At the same time, according to the plans of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, 6.9 thousand combine harvesters should be produced in 2025. However, the market does not need such a volume of equipment now, Rostselmash notes.
• The exchange plans to launch grain trading in spot mode, reports the FAS. Exchange trading in grain in the mode of a double counter anonymous auction on the basis of the SRT port of Novorossiysk is discussed. Grain exporters will act as buyers, and grain producers will act as sellers. It is assumed that agricultural products purchased on the exchange will receive priority when transported through the Russian Railways network.
• The share of the southern regions in Russian wheat exports in the current agricultural year may decrease from 69% a year earlier to a minimum of 57% in the entire history of observations, ICAR reports. Analysts attribute this to a sharp decline in yields in the south.
The volume of grain loading in January-November 2025 through the Russian Railways network amounted to 23.8 million tons, which is 16.6% less than in the same period last year. Loading of chemical and mineral fertilizers increased by 4.5% (64.4 million tons).
• According to FAO forecasts, expected global cereal production in 2025 could exceed 3 billion tonnes for the first time. The upward revision of wheat production estimates in December was primarily due to improved crop prospects in Argentina. In addition, forecasts for wheat in the EU and the USA were revised upward.
• Customs duties from December 10, 2025 on all grain crops will be zero.
BELARUS • As of December 1, 11.1 million tons of grain were threshed, including rapeseed and corn. Grains and legumes have been harvested from 99% of the area, the average yield is 43.7 c/ha, which is 5.6 c/ha higher than last year.
KAZAKHSTAN • From December 7, Russian Railways temporarily suspended the transit of grain from Kazakhstan to the port of St. Petersburg. The restriction applies to cargo traveling to the New Port station of the Oktyabrskaya Railway, one of the key points for the export of Kazakh agricultural products to European countries.
• Subsidizing of wheat shipments to distant markets will take place from January to September 2026. It is planned to allocate 30 billion tenge for these purposes, the Food Corporation reported. Debt to exporters for 2025 will be fully repaid within the limits established by the Government. This year, over 31 billion tenge was allocated to support wheat exports.
UKRAINE • The pace of Ukrainian grain exports lags behind last year’s. Since the beginning of the agricultural season, 12.8 million tons of grains and leguminous crops have been exported, compared to 18.8 million on the same date in the previous season.
