Farms in the Novgorod region refused to sow winter crops due to bad weather conditions, reports Interfax with reference to the regional Ministry of Agriculture.
“The rains have waterlogged the soil, the equipment is “sinking” in the fields, and full-fledged winter sowing has become impossible,” said a ministry official.
At the same time, he emphasized that the total area under grain crops in the region will not decrease.
“The regional grain wedge will remain the same - 8.9 thousand hectares. Spring crops will occupy the “allocated” 6.7 thousand hectares in the spring of 2027. In addition, the 2.2 thousand hectares that were allocated for winter crops this fall will be sown with spring crops,” the ministry added.
According to the interlocutor, an increase in spring crops at the expense of a decrease in winter crops in the region due to weather conditions - perhaps not so drastic - was practiced before. “Our farmers have made similar adjustments before,” the ministry summarized.
