Global cereal consumption in 2026–27 is estimated at 2,965 million tonnes, 4.1 million tonnes (0.1 percent) higher than forecast in July and 5.5 million tonnes (0.2 percent) higher than in 2025–26. Consumption estimates for the 2025-26 season were also revised upward by 7.5 million tonnes from July levels due to higher-than-previously expected use of coarse grains for feed purposes. Total consumption of coarse grains and rice will continue to increase in the 2026–2027 season, with wheat consumption projected to decline from the high level of the 2025–2026 season, when the record 2025 harvest resulted in a significant amount of wheat being diverted to feed and, to some extent, industrial uses. Despite a slight decrease in forecasts for coarse grain consumption compared to July data, it is expected that by the end of the 2026–2027 season, their consumption will increase and exceed the already high levels of the 2025–2026 season. This forecast is based on continued strong demand for feed consumption, including barley in China and maize in the United States, which saw a record harvest of the crop in 2025. Global rice consumption forecast for the 2026-2027 season was increased by 0.8 million tons from its July level to 559.0 million tons, up 0.5 percent from the 2025-2026 season, mainly due to increased food consumption driven by population growth.
The forecast for global cereal stocks at the end of the 2027 growing season was lowered by 10.7 million tons (1.1 percent) from July data to an estimated 947.2 million tons. Thus, the level of world grain reserves will be only 1.8 million tons (0.2 percent) higher than the level at the beginning of the season. This month, the forecast for global wheat stocks at the end of the season was slightly adjusted upward, with expected increases in stocks in the Russian Federation and Ukraine due to shipping problems across the Black Sea and limited capacity on alternative export routes more than offset by declines in stocks in the European Union due to a weak harvest. However, early-season inventory levels also declined as exporters, most notably Canada, continued to ship large volumes of grain to importing countries around the world in the first half of 2026. This month, the forecast for end-of-season feed grain inventories was lowered by 13.5 million tons (3.4 percent) for both corn and barley, and instead of the previously expected significant increase for the 2026-2027 season, they are likely to remain at early-season levels. The forecast for end-of-season corn stocks in the United States has been lowered due to strong exports in recent months, which are expected to continue at similar levels into the 2026-2027 season. Lower end-of-season corn stock levels are also expected in the European Union and Paraguay, where production forecasts have been revised downward. Barley stocks could also decline as China continues to divert existing barley supplies to feed. Thus, the ratio of global cereal stocks to consumption in the 2026-2027 season could be 31.6 percent, down from the previous season's 31.9 percent, but remaining at a relatively high level compared to previous periods. Global rice stocks at the end of the 2026-2027 season are now estimated at 215.1 million tonnes, 1.0 million tonnes higher than forecast in July, as higher stock forecasts in the Islamic Republic of Iran, Myanmar and the Philippines more than offset lower forecasts for the United States. However, despite the upward revision, global rice ending stocks may be 2.7 percent below the record level at the start of the season, due to an expected decrease in stocks in rice exporting countries.
This month, FAO's forecast for global grain trade in the 2026-27 (June/July) season was raised slightly by 1.7 million tonnes (0.3 percent) to 509.3 million tonnes. The revision is mainly driven by the expected increase in corn trade volumes, with the United States poised to strengthen its position as the largest exporter on the back of robust global demand and improved export competitiveness. Argentina can also increase its export volume to 39.0 million tons, approaching Brazil in this indicator. Additional import demand is expected from Europe, where the production forecast was significantly lowered. The current forecast also takes into account the ongoing uncertainty regarding exports from the Black Sea region. Exports from the Russian Federation and Ukraine are expected to remain strong, but challenging shipping conditions and logistics risks, coupled with limited capacity on alternative routes, have increased uncertainty about the timing and volume of shipments, prompting importers to diversify their purchases, which could benefit shipments from other supplying countries. Despite this month's upward revision, global grain trade is expected to remain below the 2025-26 season's record levels. According to the latest data, the season is ending on a favorable note for leading wheat exporters, particularly Canada and the European Union, as well as the US, the largest corn exporter. The forecast for global barley trade in the 2026-2027 season has been revised downward, with shipments from Australia and Canada, mainly to China, not expected to offset shortfalls in exports from the European Union, Russian Federation and Ukraine. FAO's forecast for international rice trade in 2026 (January-December) was raised by 0.7 million tonnes to 60.5 million tonnes as more optimistic import expectations, particularly in the Philippines, offset lower imports in several West African countries, notably Senegal. However, with possible lower import demand in Asia and Africa, global rice trade could be 1.9 percent lower than the record year of 2025.
