Since the beginning of the year, Russian farmers have purchased 5.6 million tons of mineral fertilizers (in active substance, active ingredient), taking into account accumulated resources, Interfax reports with reference to the Russian Association of Fertilizer Manufacturers (RAPU) and data from the Ministry of Agriculture.
The Russian agro-industrial complex's need for mineral fertilizers for 2025 has been 100% met (according to the Ministry of Agriculture's plan - 5.56 million tons of a.i.) and supplies have already begun for spring field work, the press release notes.
In the structure of consumption in the domestic market, 53% were nitrogen fertilizers, 41% were phosphorus-containing fertilizers, and 6% were potash fertilizers.
RAPU President Andrey Guryev, through the press service, noted that industry enterprises continue to consider it necessary to index prices for fertilizers for the domestic market.
“Today, a number of objective prerequisites have been formed for the indexation of marginal prices. In particular, the price of natural gas (the main raw material for the production of the most popular nitrogen mineral fertilizers) has increased by a third since October 2022, including after three-fold price indexation. From January 1, 2025, the mineral extraction tax rate for potash and phosphate ore has been increased. Taking into account the repeated increase in tariffs of natural monopolies for gas and electricity and rail transportation, the increase in the cost of fertilizer production in Russia has reached 25% since October 2022, depending on the product. In this regard, price indexation remains a pressing issue, directly affecting the industry’s ability to continue implementing investment programs: today projects worth another 2 trillion rubles are under implementation,” Guryev said.
He also confirmed the forecast for fertilizer production by Russian enterprises in 2025 at 65 million tons, exports at 45 million tons (compared to 63 and 42 million tons, respectively, in 2024).
The largest increases in purchases of Russian fertilizers this year were India (+40% year-on-year), Brazil (+11%) and Africa (+31%).
